Most artists earn very little. Nevertheless, there is no shortage of aspiring young artists. Do they give to the arts willingly or unknowingly? Governments and other institutions also give to the arts, to raise the low incomes. But their support is ineffective: subsidies only increase the artists' poverty.The economy of the arts is exceptional. Although the arts operate successfully in the marketplace, their natural affinity is with gift-giving, rather than with commercial exchange. People believe that artists are selflessly dedicated to art, that price does not reflect quality, and that the arts are free. But is it true?This unconventional multidisciplinary analysis explains the exceptional economy of the arts. Insightful illustrations from the practice of a visual artist support the analysis.

Dit onderzoek vertrekt vanuit de vaststelling dat holebi-verenigingen er maar moeilijk in slagen holebi's van niet-Belgische origine te bereiken. Vooral allochtone meisjes zijn erg onzichtbaar. Dit wordt bevestigd door Merhaba, een landelijke vereniging die zich specifiek richt op allochtone holebi's (voornamelijk met een mediterrane, moslim of Midden-Oosten achtergrond) en door Çavaria, de koepelvereniging van Vlaamse en Brusselse holebi- en transgenderverenigingen. Volgens Merhaba zouden de klassieke verenigingen sterk gericht zijn op 'coming out'. Een belangrijk aspect daarvan is zelfidentificatie als homoseksueel en het openlijk daarvoor uitkomen. Het achterliggend idee is dat coming-out bevorderlijk is voor het zelfbeeld en welzijn van de persoon in kwestie. Dit proces zou echter anders verlopen voor allochtone holebi's, waar er meer nood is aan een 'coming-in'. Dit is een relatief nieuw concept binnen het onderzoeksveld en verwijst naar het intreden in de holebi-subcultuur. Bovendien verloopt coming-out anders voor mannen en vrouwen. Ondermeer met betrekking tot gendernormering en conformiteit speelt een verschillende dynamiek. Genderspecifieke verwachtingen ten aanzien van een passieve seksualiteit en het zich inschrijven in een klassieke taakverdeling binnen het gezin, vormen voor holebi-vrouwen een beperkende context. Daartegenover biedt het normatieve model van de seksueel actieve en op de buitenwereld gerichte man, allicht meer mogelijkheden voor de beleving van een alternatieve seksuele oriëntatie. Allochtone lesbiennes ervaren dus verschillende mechanismen van achterstelling en discriminatie. Ten eerste is er de seksuele voorkeur die hen tot een gestigmatiseerde minderheid maakt. Ten tweede is er hun etniciteit waardoor ze ondermeer te maken krijgen met een Westerse interpretatie van coming out. Zo kan het concept coming-out in plaats van het bevrijdende potentieel dat het in zich draagt, leiden tot achterstelling. Ten derde is er het genderaspect waardoor allochtone lesbiennes geconfronteerd worden met genderspecifieke rolverwachtingen. Zo ervaren allochtone lesbiennes vaak een sterkere sociale controle vanwege hun omgeving die een coming in/out verder bemoeilijkt. Daartegenover staat een verenigingsleven dat te weinig rekening houdt met de nood aan een gediversifieerde communicatie en aanbod. Met dit onderzoek wil de auteur een eerste aanzet geven tot het in kaart brengen van de behoeften en drempels met betrekking tot coming in/out die allochtone holebi's ervaren, met bijzondere aandacht voor de genderdimensie. Daarnaast zet ze toekomstige onderzoekspistes binnen dit domein uit

By studying the reception and perception of the French Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain, this book argues that European modernist artists and intellectuals sought a primordial finality in Catholicism.
